I’ve been playing chess again recently. Maybe it’s because I’ve been so interested in decision making and chess is a game largely based on decision making. Board awareness, move calculation, and move order memorization are not just chess skills, but life skills as well

With that in mind, I’m trying a new tactic (another name for a way to win or get an advantage in chess) this week.

Here are a few chess quotes connecting the game and life:

In life, as in chess, forethought wins.”
- Gary Kasparov

"Life is a kind of chess, with struggle, competition, good and ill events."
-Benjamin Franklin

"In chess, as in life, a man is his own most dangerous opponent."
- José Raúl Capablanca (World Chess Champion)

I’ve made a lot of mistakes on the chess board this week. It’s been frustrating, but I’ve learned a lot. I’ve lost a lot of material, but the great part is when the game is over I can set them back up and try again. The same goes for life - as long as I’m willing to play.

Happy Practicing,
Tom
